Local hometown heroes and community leaders made their partnership official as Suffolk Federal (Credit Union) was welcomed onto the campus of Suffolk County Community College, with a historic sign unveiling ceremony coordinated with the Suffolk Community College Foundation.
On Wednesday, November 20, local dignitaries and officials from all three entities joined together on the school’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood for the first landmark reveal of the outdoor partnership sign marking the brand-new Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena. Formerly Suffolk County Community College’s Health, Sports & Education Center, the 60,000-square foot, state-of-the-art facility hosts thousands of visitors each year through events including athletic games and expos. Home to three multi-purpose courts, sporting fields, indoor and outdoor running tracks, an eight-lane swimming pool, fully equipped fitness center and more, the center is situated alongside the Long Island Expressway.
The Nov. 20 event also marked the first official unveiling of additional naming collateral and branding being implemented throughout the Suffolk County Community College campuses. The afternoon’s festivities ended with an official unveiling of the arena sign.
“We could not be prouder of our partnership with Suffolk County Community College and the Suffolk Community College Foundation and look forward to continued success utilizing the endless possibilities we are able to create together for years to come,” said Ralph D. Spencer, President & CEO of Suffolk Federal.
Like the College and its Foundation, Suffolk Federal has been a long-time trusted institution within the Suffolk County community. The credit union will bring that same standard of commitment and service to the college’s students through financial education, banking support and the annual awarding of scholarships. This past summer alone, the credit union presented six area graduating high school seniors with $35,000 in combined funding to begin their college careers at Suffolk County Community College last fall.
“At the heart of Suffolk Federal’s generous support, is a long-term commitment to Suffolk County students. We could not have a more dedicated partner working beside us as we seek to provide enhanced access to an exceptional higher education experience within our shared region,” said Louis Petrizzo, Suffolk County Community College Interim President. “Our student body will now have expanded opportunities to succeed at Suffolk and prepare for their careers thanks to Suffolk Federal’s multi-year commitment,” added President Petrizzo.
“We are indeed fortunate that Suffolk Federal chose to partner with us in order to support the future leaders of tomorrow. Thanks to the credit union’s gift, the outlook for Suffolk’s students continues to be both bright and promising,” said Belinda Alvarez Groneman, Chairperson of the Suffolk Community College Foundation.
“Suffolk County Community College is the largest community college within the State University of New York system, and Suffolk Federal is the largest independent credit union in Suffolk County, so when two locally-focused forces join together for the collective good, you know great outcomes are sure to follow,” said Mary Lou Araneo, Vice President for Institution Advancement at the College.
“This historic naming agreement marks the beginning of an active and exciting partnership among three leading Suffolk County institutions. We anticipate that this partnership will continue to grow, supporting student success for many years to come,” said Sylvia A. Diaz, PhD, LMSW, Executive Director of the Suffolk Community College Foundation.
In addition to the arena’s new branding, changes include additional signage inside and outside the arena, the display of the credit union’s logo on the court floor, the opportunity for Suffolk Federal to participate in tabling at area events as well as student job fairs and recognition on event materials including schedules, student and alumni publications as well as corporate brochures. Additional signage will also be placed at the gym facilities at the College’s Riverhead and Selden Campuses.
Suffolk County Community College is a two-year, open enrollment institution with three campuses and two downtown centers. More than 70-degree programs and 30 certificate program options are offered.
