Suffolk Federal celebrated an extremely successful 2019 with a year-long array of meaningful member-driven events and promotions which raised more than $100,000 dollars for local nonprofits and charitable organizations focused on specific causes. “Our commitment to our members, dedication to service and support to strengthen the communities where we do business is extremely important to the credit union,” said Ralph D. Spencer, Jr., Suffolk Federal President and CEO. “Giving back and enriching our local communities is both a mission and a passion for Suffolk Federal,” he continued.
Suffolk Federal’s year of giving highlights include:
Supporting Community Partners: One of the focuses of Suffolk Federal has been on building meaningful relationships in each community where the financial institution does business and being an essential partner by supporting the causes and initiatives that serve such a vital role with improving Long Island. Among the many efforts supported were the annual LI2DAY Breast Cancer Walk which raises awareness and funds for breast cancer and other cancer research, to benefit cancer sufferers, survivors, and their families, and to support organizations that are participating in such efforts. This year, with a combined sponsorship donation and member fundraising effort, Suffolk Federal raised more than $3,000 for the cause. Suffolk Federal also partnered with the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, the largest youth-serving nonprofit agency on Long Island, which serves more than 40,000 girls. Suffolk Federal sponsored the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s Discovery World STEM Center which offers unique services not only to Girl Scouts but also local school districts, youth agencies and underserved populations throughout Suffolk County with a diverse selection of programs including environmental science, physics, engineering, chemistry, mathematics, zoology and meteorology. In addition to this sponsorship and several other donations throughout the year in support of Girl Scouts, Suffolk Federal members also donated their cash-back incentive—five-cents from each signature-based purchase made using their Suffolk Federal Girl Scouts MasterCard® Debit Card. Suffolk Federal also donated the net proceeds of each member’s Suffolk Federal Girl Scouts checkbook purchase. During the holiday season, Suffolk Federal joined forces with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island and raised $5,932 for their Holidays for Kids Sake
Support for Local Community Initiatives: To further enhance support in Long Island communities, each Suffolk Federal branch is provided an opportunity to select initiatives which they are passionate about. Throughout the year, Suffolk Federal branches supported such worthwhile organizations and initiatives including Helping Makes U Happy, Mondays At Racine, Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, Southampton Head Start, Jacie’s Kids, Sayville Village Improvement Society, Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk and many more.
Supporting Our Veterans: For the fourth year in a row, Suffolk Federal served as Lead Sponsor for extreme distance ultra-marathon runner and Suffolk Federal’s Senior VP of Information Technology Eva Casale as she completed an incredible seven marathons in seven days to raise funds and awareness for Hope for the Warriors. Eva ran a total of 192 miles during her “Every Veteran Appreciated Week.” Each marathon focused on honoring local servicemen killed in action and was linked to communities they called home. With a donation from Suffolk Federal combined with individual donations, the events raised nearly $30,000.
Supporting Education through Suffolk Federal Scholarship Program: Suffolk Federal supported members in making their educational dreams come true by offering local high-school seniors a chance to win scholarships. The credit union presented a total of $35,000 in college scholarships ($5,000 each) to six local high-school seniors who are now attending Suffolk County Community College. In addition, one student received an additional $5,000 scholarship provided by the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, which was matched by Suffolk Federal for a total of $10,000. Also one student received $5,000 as part of the Michael E. Reilly Foundation Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Fire Science and Emergency Medical Technology which was awarded to a student enrolled in a Fire Protection Technology program.
